Dubai: How do you differentiate between a real SMS and a scam message? Dubai is helping you find out with its ‘Don’t get Played’ campaign – and you could even win cash prizes as you learn cybersecurity tips and get more savvy on how to deal with scams and attacks online. Here’s what you need to know. What is the Don’t Get Played campaign?Don’t Get Played is a cybersecurity awareness campaign, launched by the Dubai Electronic Security Centre (DESC), the official government department responsible for cybersecurity, information protection, and digital safety in Dubai, on October 1, as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. The campaign aims to help members of the community recognise common scam tactics and warning signs, while encouraging a simple and effective three-step habit before responding to anything suspicious: Pause. Verify. Don’t Get Played. You can learn all about it, and register for competitions, at dontgetplayed.ae.How does the campaign work? At the heart of the campaign is ‘Yado Salama’, a virtual Emirati grandmother, whose sharp instincts make her difficult to fool. The campaign, which is available on dontgetplayed.ae, introduces a new kind of scammer every week, delving in-depth into the strategies and modes of communication they tend to use, as well as the emotion they prey upon.Yado Salama helps residents identify the signs of a scam in each case, helping individuals learn the importance of pausing and verifying before taking action. What is the purpose of the campaign?According to data from Sumsub, a global digital identity verification and cybersecurity platform, sophisticated, multi-step fraud attempts detected by the platform increased by 180% in 2025 compared with 2024, rising from 10% to 28% of all identity fraud cases detected. The DESC’s campaign focuses on warning signs that can give a scam away, no matter the type of scam – from impersonation and fraudulent messages to artificial intelligence or AI-manipulated voices, images and documents. What competitions can I take part in?The Don’t Get Played campaign currently has four challenges you can take part in, with a single mission: turn cyber awareness into something people want to watch, share and play.
