Dubai RTA hosts AI challenge to develop smart mobility solutions

Dubai: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with the Canadian University Dubai and Mistral AI, a company specialising in artificial intelligence, recently organised the “Innovation for Smart Mobility” challenge.Held at the Fourth Industrial Revolution Transport Lab at the RTA’s headquarters, the challenge was organised by the Emerging and Innovative Technologies Section of the Technology Strategy and Governance Department within the Corporate Technology Support Sector. It aimed to develop innovative AI-based solutions to enhance traffic management efficiency and address congestion challenges across Dubai.Five multidisciplinary student teams from the Canadian University Dubai participated in the challenge, working intensively over four days. Their activities included exploring transportation challenges, analysing data, generating ideas, developing prototypes, reviewing solutions with specialists and experts, and presenting final proposals and working models to an evaluation panel. The challenge led to the development of five smart solution concepts focused on improving traffic signal performance, predicting congestion, analysing traffic flow, coordinating smart intersections and supporting proactive decision-making. Each team presented a working prototype that demonstrated the potential of emerging technologies to support the development of Dubai’s transport and mobility ecosystem. The initiative helped strengthen students’ practical skills in artificial intelligence, data analysis, innovation and teamwork, while giving them the opportunity to address real-world transportation challenges and transform creative ideas into viable, scalable solutions. The collaboration between the RTA, the Canadian University Dubai and Mistral AI represents a leading model of cooperation between the public sector, academia and technology companies. The university supported student participation, while Mistral AI provided the tools and platforms needed to develop the prototypes and proposed solutions. The challenge reflects the RTA’s strategic commitment to strengthening its role as an innovation platform that supports future readiness, talent development and collaboration with academic and technology institutions. It provides direct engagement opportunities for students and researchers, helping attract high-quality ideas and guide them towards practical applications that support Dubai’s mobility system. The initiative also enables young talent to work alongside the RTA’s experts and innovation labs to test AI-driven and data-powered solutions, transforming student projects into scalable and testable prototypes. It further aims to strengthen private-sector partnerships and promote technological advancement by keeping pace with the latest developments in the labour market.Engaging students in challenges of this nature creates added value by leveraging their advanced skills in programming, data analysis and experimental design, while generating fresh and innovative ideas within a university environment that encourages research and development.
