Dubai: Dubai Police have seized 13,657 electric scooters during the first eight months of the year as part of intensified traffic campaigns targeting riders who violate traffic laws and safety regulations.Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said enforcement teams are continuing to take legal action against offending riders to protect both scooter users and other road users from accidents that can result in fatalities, serious injuries and permanent disabilities.He said traffic patrols would not tolerate dangerous behaviour by electric scooter riders, particularly those using roads with speed limits exceeding 60km/h despite the availability of dedicated paths in several parts of the emirate.According to Brig. bin Suwaidan, enforcement teams are focusing on a range of violations, including riding against traffic, using pavements, travelling through commercial markets and narrow alleys, crossing roads in a dangerous manner, moving between lanes across road dividers and operating scooters in non-designated areas.He warned that such practices pose a direct threat to the safety of riders and other road users.Brig. bin Suwaidan also stressed the importance of complying with safety requirements, including wearing approved helmets and reflective vests, obeying traffic signals, signs and police instructions, and ensuring scooters are properly equipped.He said electric scooters should have a white front light and reflector, a red rear light and reflector, and fully functioning brakes before being used on public roads and designated tracks.Calling on riders to act responsibly, Brig. bin Suwaidan urged them to follow designated routes, adhere to speed limits and comply with all safety regulations.He emphasised that compliance with traffic laws is a fundamental responsibility that contributes to protecting lives and enhancing safety and security across Dubai's roads.
