Dubai, UAE: Dubai Municipality has launched a specialised nanoparticle detection laboratory for food products, marking a significant step in enhancing food safety and quality standards across the emirate. The new facility, operated by Dubai Central Laboratory, uses advanced ICP-MS technology to accurately detect titanium dioxide in processed food products, with test results delivered in under five minutes.Enhancing food safety and oversightThe laboratory is designed to support regulatory oversight and improve the quality of food products in the market. It reflects proactive efforts to respond to developments in the food industry, particularly the growing use of nanotechnology in manufacturing.Dubai Municipality said the initiative strengthens its ability to monitor food safety while keeping pace with global advancements in laboratory testing and analysis.Advanced testing capabilitiesEng. Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, Director of the Dubai Central Laboratory Department, described the facility as a qualitative addition to the emirate’s laboratory services.“The new tests rely on advanced analytical technologies that enable precise measurement of nanoparticle size, distribution, and properties,” she said, noting that the system can distinguish between conventional and nanoscale forms of titanium dioxide. The rapid testing capability supports faster regulatory decisions based on accurate and reliable data.Supporting innovation and future applicationsOfficials said the laboratory will serve as a foundation for expanding research and applications beyond food safety, potentially covering sectors such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and packaging materials. The move is also expected to support policymakers in developing regulations governing the use of nanoparticles in various industries.Flexible testing capacityThe facility currently processes around 60 samples per day, with the capacity to increase to 100 samples during emergency situations.Dubai Municipality said the ability to deliver quick results enhances efficiency and supports timely decision-making across the food safety system.Commitment to public healthThe launch forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Dubai’s food safety framework and protect public health, while reinforcing the emirate’s position as a global leader in laboratory testing and quality assurance.Dubai Municipality reaffirmed its commitment to investing in advanced technologies and developing its capabilities to address future challenges in safety and quality.
