Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the opening of a new temporary staircase at the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro station, due to ongoing expansion works.In an announcement on its official social media accounts, the authority informed Metro users that directional signs have been placed around the area, with access routes clearly shown on the map, to make your detour easier.Here is all you need to know about the updates to your daily commute.Where is the new temporary staircase located?The new staircase is situated near Exit 1 at the station. Other changes announcedOn July 4, the RTA had also announced the temporary closure of the bus and taxi service road at the station, to accommodate for the expansion works. The existing access road has been reserved for construction vehicles. A new alternative parking area has been provided near Exit 1, to facilitate the movement of commuters.The closure will remain in effect until the end of 2026, according to the RTA. What are the expansion works for?These temporary traffic changes are part of the expansion of Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station, which was announced in June last year, by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in collaboration with Emaar Properties, to deal with the surge of users experienced at the station, particularly during major events like New Year’s Eve celebrations and on public holidays.The station has seen a massive rise in users, which increased from 6.13 million passengers in 2013 to 10.58 million in the year 2024, with nearly 58,000 passengers boarding and alighting at the station every day.Once the expansion works are complete, the stations total area will increase from 6,700 to 8,500 square metres, with additional escalators and elevators, expanding the platform areas and separating entry and exit points to optimise passenger movement.
