Dubai: Do you own an electric vehicle (EV) in Dubai?There’s a convenient way for you to recharge your car at any one of the 400+ charging stations provided by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). All you have to do is get the EV Green Charger Card.What is an EV Green Charger Card?Launched in 2015, DEWA’s EV Green Charger Card gives you access to over 1,270 charging points across Dubai, located strategically across malls, airports, petrol stations, transit hubs, business districts and residential areas.The initiative aligns with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, advancing the city’s goal to reduce carbon emissions by 10 million tonnes, and to transition 50% of vehicles on the roads into electric vehicles, by 2050.While you can use DEWA’s charging stations without the card, by utilising ‘Guest mode’, registering for an EV Green Charger Card gives you access to your own EV user dashboard, where you can:View and pay outstanding amountsCheck your charging historyMonitor your EV’s consumption graphsLocate and view the status of nearby EV Green Charger stationsDocuments requiredTo apply for an EV Green Charger Card, you will require the following documents:Emirates IDValid vehicle licenceDEWA accountHow to apply for an EV Green Charger CardYou can apply for the EV Green Charger Card through the DEWA website or its Smart App, via the DubaiNow app, or in-person at a DEWA Customer Care Centre.Cost:Security deposit: Dh500Delivery charges: Dh20How to apply through DEWA Smart App:Follow these steps to apply for the EV Green Charger Card through DEWA’s Smart App, and simplify charging your EV:Download the DEWA Smart App from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Log in with your UAE PASS.Navigate to ‘Services’ and select ‘EV Account and Charging Card Management’. Select ‘Create EV Account’.Enter your personal details, as well as your vehicle information.Pay the card delivery fees and security deposit (if applicable).Upon submission, you will receive a confirmation message. Your EV account will be activated, and you will receive your account details, as well as EV charging instructions.The processing time for your EV Green Charger Card is three days, and the card will be couriered to your specified address.How to apply through DEWA’s website:If you’d prefer to apply for the card through DEWA’s website, follow these steps:Visit DEWA’s online portal at dewa.gov.ae. Log in using your UAE PASS.Click on ‘Services’. Select ‘EV Account & Charging Card Management’. Your account is immediately activated.How to use the EV Green Charger CardNow that your account is active, you can follow these steps to use your EV Green Charger at a DEWA charging station:Head to a convenient charging station. You can locate one from the DEWA or DubaiNow apps.At the charging station, drive into an allocated spot. Scan your EV Green Charger Card to initiate the charging process.Plug in the charging cable into your vehicle.Once complete, scan your card again to stop the charging cycle, and unplug the cable.The charging fees are added by DEWA to your next Green Bill (your digital monthly statement).How much does it cost to charge an EV?In January 2025, free charging for non-commercial EV users ended in Dubai. Since then, DEWA follows a fee-based structure, as per UAE Cabinet Decision No. 81 of 2024. The UAE’s first government-owned EV charging network, UAEV, introduced the following standardised tariffs, set by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure:AC chargers: Dh0.70 per kWh (plus VAT)DC chargers: Dh1.20 per kWh (plus VAT)
