Congo to receive 70,000 Ebola vaccine doses as authorities battle fast-spreading outbreak

Bunia, Congo: Congo is set to receive 70,000 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine, a move health authorities hope will strengthen efforts to contain what officials have described as the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record. The World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners announced on Thursday that the vaccine allocation represents a significant boost to the country's response efforts.Ervebo is licensed for use against the Ebola virus, one of the pathogens responsible for Ebola disease, but it has not been approved specifically for the Bundibugyo virus, which is causing the current outbreak. However, WHO said early laboratory and animal studies suggest the vaccine may offer some level of protection against the Bundibugyo strain.According to the agency, 20,000 doses will be allocated to a Phase III clinical trial aimed at assessing the vaccine's effectiveness against the Bundibugyo virus. The remaining 50,000 doses will be used to immunise frontline personnel and healthcare workers, in line with recommendations from WHO experts.Health authorities hope the vaccination effort will help curb transmission and protect those most at risk while researchers gather further evidence on the vaccine's potential role in controlling the outbreak.
