ALBAWABA — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva taunted jailed former president Jair Bolsonaro during a heated debate with his son, Flavio, as personal insults and corruption allegations dominated their first face-to-face encounter before the presidential runoff.
“Vote for me, Bolsonaro. You know your son, and you know I’m better than him,” Lula said during Sunday’s debate, according to Al Jazeera’s October 19 report.
The clash came one week before the October 25 vote. Flavio Bolsonaro led the first round with 47% against Lula’s 45%, setting up a closely contested finish.
Lula pressed his opponent over alleged links to jailed banker Daniel Vorcaro and questions surrounding financing for a film about his father. Bolsonaro countered with allegations involving Lula’s son. The accusations remain disputed.
The exchanges grew increasingly personal. Lula called his rival a “clown” and accused the Bolsonaro family of lying. Flavio responded by accusing the president of being stained by corruption.
At another point, Bolsonaro joked that he was fortunate to have left his wallet behind, apparently referring to Lula’s corruption conviction, which was subsequently annulled.
The candidates also clashed over food prices, public security and relations with Washington.
Flávio: "Lula, você pode explicar porque 73% dos presidiários votaram em você?"
Lula:""Eu quero é os 100%, até o teu pai. Bolsonaro, vota em mim, até você sabe que eu sou melhor que ele!"

Lula accused the Bolsonaro family of encouraging US tariffs against Brazil for political advantage. Flavio rejected the criticism and attacked the president’s foreign alliances.
With supporters holding competing demonstrations, the debate underscored the divisions surrounding a runoff that could return the Bolsonaro family to power or give Lula a fourth presidential term.
