Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Court has ordered a woman to pay AED60,000 to a young man after a planned marriage did not proceed and she failed to return money and gold bars he had given her.According to court records, the claimant filed a lawsuit seeking the return of money and gold bars worth a total of AED67,827, stating that he had intended to marry the defendant and had provided her with money and gold as part of that arrangement. He said she later decided not to proceed with the marriage and refused to return the funds and gold despite acknowledging the debt.The claimant submitted as evidence a signed acknowledgement by the parties and copies of bank transfer records.During the proceedings, both parties appeared before the court and informed it that they had reached a settlement under which the defendant would pay AED60,000 in two instalments. They requested that the settlement be recorded as an enforceable instrument.However, at a later hearing, the claimant stated that the defendant had failed to attend to sign the settlement agreement.In its ruling, the court said the signed acknowledgement established the defendant's obligation to repay AED17,300 and return two ounces of gold. The court noted that the defendant did not dispute the validity of the acknowledgement and had instead proposed a settlement of AED60,000, which was accepted by the claimant.The court found that there was no evidence showing that the defendant had paid the agreed amount and concluded that she remained liable for the debt.Accordingly, the court ordered the defendant to pay the claimant AED60,000 and to bear the fees and expenses of the case.
