ALBAWABA — Jordanian border guards thwarted an attempt by approximately 14 armed men to cross into the kingdom from Syria on Friday evening, engaging the group in a firefight, the military announced Saturday.
A military source said the group attempted to infiltrate under cover of heavy gunfire and directly engaged Jordanian forces along the northern border.
Border guards returned fire under established rules of engagement, inflicting casualties, while the remaining members fled back into Syrian territory. The military did not identify the group or specify the number killed or wounded.
The operation was carried out by a Border Guard unit affiliated with Jordan’s Northern Military Zone, according to the military account published by Ammon News.
The source reaffirmed that the Jordan Armed Forces would respond firmly to infiltration and smuggling attempts and confront anyone threatening the country’s security or violating its borders.
