ALBAWABA — Iran has given the United States with a new plan that might reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, presenting a possible path toward resuming talks after months of growing animosity.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the request was given through intermediaries to Washington and would require multiple conditions to be met before Tehran resumes transit across the key waterway.
Araghchi told The New York Times that Tehran wants a seven-day break in hostilities throughout the Mideast, including Lebanon.
The plan also calls for the release of at least $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets, removing sanctions on Iranian oil and ending what Tehran calls the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.
Iran said it will reopen the Strait of Hormuz on day seven and resume talks with Washington if the requirements were met.
Tehran is waiting for the U.S. reply, and China supports the plan, Araghchi added.

The Iranian plan made it to the United States through an intermediary, CNN and The New York Times reported.
The White House official told CNN that Washington has been involved in “positive and constructive discussions” through mediators, but no agreement has been announced.
The latest diplomatic effort comes after American and Iranian negotiators met on the margins of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, touted as the first such negotiations in months.
In June, U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a memorandum of understanding to stop the war, reopen Hormuz and initiate talks on Iran's nuclear program.
However, differences over the interpretation and implementation of the agreement, particularly over traffic across the strait, were part of the causes of the resumption of hostilities.
With the new seven-day proposal, Hormuz is once again at the forefront of efforts to defuse tensions, with Tehran waiting to see how Washington reacts.
