UAE Top 5 Banks Post 38.1B Dirham Profits, Up 7.8%

Overview:

The UAE economy demonstrated resilience across multiple sectors this week. The five largest domestic banks—First Abu Dhabi Bank, Emirates NBD, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Dubai Islamic Bank, and Mashreq—collectively posted mid-year profits of 38.1 billion dirhams, representing 7.8 percent year-on-year growth. These five institutions control 79 percent of total system assets. Concurrently, Dubai's real estate market showed sustained momentum with 2.2 billion dirhams in transaction value recorded at the start of the week.

Details:

The banking sector's strong performance underscores financial system stability despite regional economic headwinds. The profit growth was underpinned by increased lending activity, with personal consumption loans to UAE residents rising 5.5 percent to 61 billion dirhams in the first half of the year. Abu Dhabi First Bank launched a digital initiative enabling personal loan applications without paper documentation, in coordination with the Federal Human Resources Authority, reflecting sector-wide digitalization efforts.

Dubai's real estate market maintained momentum through 705 transactions generating 1.34 billion dirhams on Monday alone. Real estate developers intensified competition for market share by waiving property registration fees for purchasers, a strategy aimed at accelerating sales volume. Nine Dubai neighborhoods emerged as the most affordable rental options, with annual rents for one-bedroom units ranging from 55,000 to 65,000 dirhams across areas including Al-Nahda, Deira, Dubai South, Silicon Oasis, and Sports City.

The UAE insurance sector also demonstrated robust growth, with underwritten premiums reaching 74.8 billion dirhams in 2025, a 14.9 percent increase. Industry assets totaled 164.9 billion dirhams, up 6.1 percent, supported by 58 licensed insurers and 515 registered professionals managing 17.3 million policies.

Outlook:

Investors are monitoring upcoming remarks from Kevin Warsh, newly appointed chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve, expected this week at Jackson Hole, which may clarify global interest rate trajectories and impact emerging market capital flows into the region.

International partnerships continue reshaping sector dynamics: Dubai Chamber is reviewing economic cooperation frameworks with India, while Abu Dhabi's space sector affirmed the nation's transition from capability-building to commercial space economy participation, signaling diversification beyond traditional hydrocarbon and real estate pillars.
