Trump Expects “Very Large” Deal With Russia Beyond Ukraine

Lead:

U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday he expects to reach a "very large" agreement with Russia that extends beyond Ukraine to potentially include all of Europe, according to reporting from Al-Yaum. Trump made the statement after announcing he had met a high-level Russian envoy at the White House. The comments have amplified European anxieties about a possible realignment of American foreign policy toward Moscow amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Details:

Trump told journalists that the forthcoming agreement would be "very large" and could encompass far more than Ukraine alone. He did not specify the agreement's terms or timeline, leaving details unclear. Al-Yaum reports the remarks risk deepening European concerns that the United States may shift its strategic posture away from NATO allies and toward Russia.

European leaders responded with immediate concern. According to Al-Yaum, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized what she described as European "confusion" in Ukraine negotiations. In a message to European Council President Antonio Costa reviewed by French media, Meloni expressed frustration over multiple meetings held in different formats, saying the approach left Europe appearing uncoordinated and lacking credibility on what she called one of the most complex issues facing member states. She called for clarity on who speaks for Europe in these talks.

NATO, meanwhile, announced a concrete countermeasure. Claudio Palestini, head of innovation and technology adoption at NATO, stated Thursday that the alliance had created a simplified platform resembling e-commerce systems to help member states accelerate procurement of tested anti-drone equipment. The move followed Russian drone incursions that prompted defense concerns. NATO said it had vetted offerings from British, French, German, and American manufacturers through a public tender and months-long evaluation process.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy separately appealed to Latin American leaders for assistance. Speaking at a summit in Madrid attended by representatives from 22 nations, Zelenskyy urged countries to help Ukraine obtain equipment needed to repair energy infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks, emphasizing that every power facility in Ukraine has been affected.

Watch For:

Whether Trump and Russian officials release details of proposed negotiations or a draft agreement text in coming days, clarifying the geographic scope and terms he referenced.

Whether European governments formally request a unified negotiating position or whether individual member states pursue separate talks with Washington.

Whether Ukrainian counteroffensives or Russian military advances shift the diplomatic calculus before any U.S.-Russia framework is formalized.
