Sisi Orders Egypt Education Overhaul to Boost AI and Jobs

Lead:

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi convened a high-level meeting in New Administrative Capital today with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli and education ministers to review education sector modernization. The president issued multiple directives focusing on curriculum development, digitalization, university restructuring, increased enrollment in labor-market-aligned specializations, and expanded artificial intelligence deployment across educational institutions.

Details:

According to El-Fagr, the president met with Education Minister Mohamed Abdel Latif and Higher Education Minister to review progress on implementing the Egyptian Baccalaureate system and general secondary education reforms. During the session, the Higher Education Minister presented enrollment distribution across specializations aligned with labor market needs, confirming student numbers would be redirected toward fields matching economic demand.

President al-Sisi emphasized the importance of continuous education system development in integrated form, directing modernization of curricula and textbooks to align with global educational advances while leveraging best international practices. El-Fagr reported that the president specifically underscored the need for curriculum updates reflecting contemporary development and technological progress.

According to El-Balad, multiple parliamentary figures praised the presidential directives. Deputy Nabil al-Attar stated that the directives directly link education to labor market requirements. Nader Youssef Nassim, Education Committee rapporteur in the Senate, emphasized that the president's guidance establishes a generation capable of competing internationally. The directives additionally include continued higher education and scientific research development, consolidation of previous gains, and expanded artificial intelligence use across the sector.

Prime Minister Madbouli was tasked with implementing these directives as the government's key implementer. The presidential meeting also addressed university and institute development to strengthen educational environment quality and scientific research advancement.

Watch For:

1. Timing and scope of curriculum revision implementation — whether ministries publish updated textbook standards and timeline for rollout across primary through secondary levels during the upcoming academic year.

2. Capacity for expanded AI integration — whether technical infrastructure and teacher training programs can support broad deployment without creating regional or socioeconomic disparities in access.

3. Labor market alignment mechanisms — how government will establish formal feedback loops between employers and universities to ensure specialization enrollment adjustments reflect real, sustained job demand rather than cyclical projections.
