Saudi Arabia Signs 1.69bn Riyal Deal for Three Giant Tankers

Overview:

Saudi Arabia's maritime sector accelerated investment activity this week as the International Maritime Industries signed a contract to build three 320,000 deadweight-ton tankers equipped with advanced energy-efficiency technology. Separately, Riyadh and Singapore exchanged memoranda of understanding for crude oil storage arrangements, while non-petroleum exports grew 8.5 percent in August and the Saudi stock market rebounded sharply after a five-session decline.

Details:

The International Maritime Industries signed the tanker construction agreement with Bahri, the global maritime industrial company, during the Saudi Maritime and Logistics Conference. Each vessel will carry 320,000 metric tons of crude and feature modern energy-saving systems. Delivery is scheduled between 2029 and 2030. Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, the company's chief executive, described the step as reflecting growing development in Saudi Arabia's maritime industrial sector.

In parallel, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Energy and Singapore's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced arrangements to store Saudi crude in Singapore, with the energy market authority and JTC Corporation signing memoranda of understanding alongside Saudi Aramco during Singapore International Energy Week. Officials said both governments will coordinate implementation of the storage facility in coming months.

Saudi Arabia's non-petroleum exports, excluding re-export, grew 8.5 percent in August 2026 versus August 2025, according to the General Authority for Statistics. Plastics, rubber and their products led exports at 22.6 percent of the total, followed by chemicals at 20.9 percent. The ratio of non-petroleum exports including re-export to imports reached 36.51 percent, a marginal rise from 36.48 percent the previous year.

Outlook:

Investors are monitoring whether sustained growth in non-oil exports can offset oil price volatility and support Vision 2030 diversification targets. The maritime contract signals confidence in long-term energy infrastructure even as upstream production adjusts to global demand.
