Saudi Arabia Plans to Double East-West Pipeline to 10M bpd

Overview:

Saudi Arabia's energy sector dominated regional economic focus as international leaders gathered in Riyadh for the twenty-fifth World Petroleum Conference. Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman announced infrastructure expansion plans, secured bilateral cooperation agreements with neighbouring states, and reinforced the kingdom's commitment to global energy supply stability. Non-oil economic activities now represent 55 percent of Saudi GDP, while direct foreign investment grew 6.5 percent despite global headwinds.

Details:

Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman confirmed that Saudi Aramco's East-West pipeline currently transports 5.8 million barrels daily, with plans to increase capacity to 10 million barrels per day over two to three years. This expansion aims to establish alternative export routes beyond the Strait of Hormuz and strengthen supply chain resilience. Saudi Aramco's Chief Executive Amin Nasser stated that replenishing crude oil stockpiles may require approximately two years given current supply pressures.

The kingdom signed three memoranda of understanding with Kuwait, Qatar, and Egypt to enhance energy sector cooperation. International support for Saudi energy security was evident as the European Union, OPEC, and global energy leaders condemned Houthi militant attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure and reaffirmed commitment to supply reliability.

On diversification, Deputy Finance Minister Abdulmohsen al-Khalf reported that non-oil activities now constitute 55 percent of Saudi economic output, reflecting successful economic transformation. Investment Minister Fahd al-Siyaf noted that foreign direct investment achieved 6.5 percent growth despite international challenges. The kingdom is implementing 16 localization programmes in partnership with seven Saudi companies to build domestic industrial capacity.

Outlook:

Global oil markets will monitor Saudi production updates and pipeline expansion timelines as geopolitical tensions affect regional supply routes. Investors are watching U.S. inflation data and Federal Reserve signals for impact on energy commodities pricing and currency markets, with crude oil prices already reflecting supply uncertainty concerns.
