Lufthansa Warns of Ticket Price Rises Above 10% in 2026

Overview:

Global aviation costs are climbing as geopolitical risk reshapes energy markets. Lufthansa projects 2026 fuel expenses of 9.3 billion euros, up 2 billion euros year-on-year, forcing carriers to pass costs to passengers. Swiss inflation accelerated to 1.5 percent in October, its fastest pace in three years, with transport costs surging 5.3 percent. Lebanon's government launched an immediate food safety audit after recent poisoning cases, while a first electric vehicle charging station opened in Qab Elias.

Details:

Lufthansa's chief financial officer Til Straiechert stated the airline group has already hedged more than 70 percent of its expected 2025 fuel needs but cannot absorb the full 2026 increase. The announcement follows Ryanair's disclosure on Monday that it raised ticket prices and launched a cost-reduction campaign as global energy prices remain elevated. Competition among carriers to maintain margins during inflationary pressure is intensifying across the European market.

In Switzerland, the Federal Statistical Office reported consumer price index growth accelerated from 1.0 percent in September to 1.5 percent in October, the highest reading since December 2023 when inflation stood at 1.7 percent. Transport sector inflation jumped to 5.3 percent from 3.6 percent month-on-month, while housing and energy costs climbed 2.5 percent.

Lebanon's Economy and Trade Minister Amer Al-Basat ordered consumer protection inspectors to immediately investigate meat storage facilities, both licensed and unlicensed, within 48 hours following foodborne illness cases. Directives emphasized verification of meat sources, storage conditions, refrigeration standards, and validity checks at butcher shops, restaurants, and retail outlets.

Outlook:

Airlines face sustained pressure to balance fuel surcharges against demand elasticity. Investors should monitor central bank responses to sticky inflation in developed markets, particularly ahead of the European Central Bank's succession decision on the Eurosystem meeting scheduled for November 9.
