Lebanon Civil Defense Rescues 7 Crew From Stricken Timber Vessel

Lead:

Civil Defense units coordinated with the Lebanese military and Beirut fire services on October 26 to rescue seven crew members who abandoned a timber-laden vessel after it began taking on water during transit from Sidon to Beirut. Nine personnel remained aboard as the ship approached the port. According to Al-Joumhouria, the vessel ran aground during the journey and unloading operations were underway once it reached Beirut's dock.

Details:

Al-Joumhouria reported that Civil Defense teams worked in cooperation with the Lebanese Navy and Beirut's fire brigade to ensure the safety of all personnel aboard the timber carrier. As the vessel's condition worsened, seven crew members entered the water and were rescued by Civil Defense elements maintaining surveillance of the ship. The maritime coordination center (JRCC) was engaged throughout the operation. Ad-Diyar added that nine individuals remained on the vessel, positioned approximately one kilometer from Beirut port, with Civil Defense units standing ready to guide it safely to dock.

The incident underscores ongoing maritime hazards in Lebanese waters. Civil Defense maintained continuous contact with the vessel's captain and sustained operational readiness to secure the remaining crew's arrival at port.

Watch For:

Completion of the vessel's docking and full cargo offloading; any formal investigation by maritime authorities into the water ingress cause; whether the incident prompts updated safety protocols for commercial shipping in Lebanese territorial waters.
