Jordan Church Attack in Karak Kills Eight, King Orders Response

Lead:

King Abdullah II of Jordan chaired an urgent meeting of the National Security Council on Saturday following an armed assault on a church in Hamoud village, Karak province, which killed eight civilians and wounded 27 others. The attack targeted worshippers and mourners gathered for a funeral at the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George. The king directed security forces to respond with firmness and an iron hand against those responsible, characterizing the incident as a terrorist attack and declaring that the security of Jordanians is a red line.

Details:

According to Al-Watan, the assault occurred on Friday when armed extremists opened fire on civilians in and around the church. Medhat Shalaby, an Jordanian dentist who had returned home two months earlier with his newly earned dental degree, was among the victims. The attack initially claimed seven lives, with an eighth death confirmed Saturday morning at Prince Ali Military Hospital, where one of two critical cases succumbed after undergoing major surgery and requiring mechanical ventilation.

The government declared a three-day national mourning period with flags at half-mast. Health Minister Ibrahim Al-Badour reported that 26 wounded remain hospitalized, including one in critical condition. Security forces continued pursuit of the perpetrators as of Saturday.

The incident prompted international response. Saudi Arabia's government issued a statement expressing solidarity with Jordan and rejecting any attempt to harm Jordanian security and stability. Additionally, the United States reduced staffing at its embassies in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, and Lebanon as a precautionary measure, reflecting heightened security risk assessments across the Middle East amid broader regional tensions.

Watch For:

Arrest announcements and identification of the attack's perpetrators; whether the incident triggers broader security operations across the country; statements from Jordanian political parties and international allies addressing counterterrorism strategy in the near term.
