Egypt Targets 5.1% Growth and 81.9% Debt-to-GDP by 2030

Overview:

Egypt's cabinet has announced fresh targets for economic restructuring through 2030, building on prior-year reforms. The government projects annual growth of 5.1 percent and aims to lower public debt to 81.9 percent of gross domestic product. Concurrently, authorities maintain fuel prices unchanged, while supply-chain developments continue across agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors.

Details:

The Ministry of Finance confirmed that recent economic and fiscal reforms have stabilized public finances, strengthened foreign reserves, and accelerated momentum in ongoing adjustment programs. The debt-to-GDP ratio decline to 81.9 percent represents progress in fiscal consolidation efforts. Policymakers emphasize the role of private investment, which now accounts for 65 to 67 percent of total investment flows in the country.

On energy pricing, the Pricing Committee elected to hold petrol and diesel rates steady following a review of automatic pricing mechanisms and global market variables, particularly crude oil supply disruptions. Energy experts warned separately that prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz threatens global energy security and could sustain upward pressure on petroleum costs.

In infrastructure, the National Authority for Tunnels reported that six giant excavation machines have begun operations on the fourth metro line. Pilot operation of Alexandria's metro project is scheduled for June 2027. The Ministry of Supply continues distributing 30 essential commodities at reduced prices across governorates to ease household burden. Private-sector employment initiatives include recruitment drives by Egypt's nuclear power project in Dabaa, offering positions to residents of Qena Governorate.

Outlook:

Investors are monitoring whether the 5.1 percent growth target proves achievable amid global commodity volatility and geopolitical supply-chain risks. Watch for implementation milestones in major infrastructure projects—metro lines, industrial zones, and export corridors—as indicators of execution capacity and private-sector confidence.
