Egypt, Saudi Arabia Condemn Attack on Qatari LNG Tanker

Lead:

Egypt's Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning an attack on the LNG carrier Al-Mayeda, operated by Qatar Gas Transport Company, while it transited Arabian Gulf waters. Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry simultaneously released its own condemnation, pledging full solidarity with Qatar. Both governments rejected what they characterized as flagrant violations of international maritime law and threats to global energy security and freedom of navigation.

Details:

Egypt's statement, as reported by El-Balad, emphasized the attack represented "a blatant violation of international law" undermining maritime safety and international commerce. Cairo stressed its "complete solidarity with sister state Qatar" in taking measures to protect its sovereignty and interests. The government reiterated the importance of preserving maritime security and respecting international legal standards.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry's response, also documented by El-Balad, characterized the incident as a "serious event" and called on the international community to take urgent steps to ensure maritime security and protect global energy supplies. Riyadh pledged support for Qatar's actions to safeguard its vessels and maintain international trade flows, demanding implementation of international law across the region.

Qatar's own Foreign Ministry statement, carried by El-Balad and confirmed via Qatari news agency QNA, reserved the right to take "all necessary measures in accordance with international law and the UN Charter" to protect its assets, interests, and personnel. Qatar confirmed that competent authorities had launched investigations into the incident.

Watch For:

Whether regional powers or international bodies release statements identifying or attributing responsibility for the attack. Potential announcements from Qatar about defensive measures or diplomatic escalation. Any further incidents or responses that widen the security crisis in the Gulf corridor.
