Egypt Money Supply Hits 14 Trillion Pounds in H1 2025-26

Overview:

Egypt's monetary authorities disclosed significant liquidity expansion during the first half of fiscal year 2025–2026, with domestic money supply climbing 7.3 percent. Simultaneously, government officials emphasized reducing external debt obligations and broadening private-sector participation in infrastructure financing as strategic economic priorities heading into 2027. Energy pricing remains stable under automatic adjustment mechanisms, while investment frameworks in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and renewable sectors show expansion signals.

Details:

The Central Bank of Egypt announced that domestic liquidity increased by approximately 954.8 billion pounds during the first six months of the 2025–2026 fiscal year, reaching 14 trillion pounds by end-December 2025. Interest rates on deposits and credit facilities both declined during the period—deposit yields fell 2.2 percent while lending rates contracted 2.7 percent, reflecting monetary policy adjustments implemented by the Central Bank's monetary policy committee.

External debt management showed progress, with long-term foreign debt balances recorded at 129.5 billion dollars as of December 2025, representing an 800-million-dollar reduction compared to the prior year-end. Finance Minister Ahmad Kajouk stated that reducing debt-servicing burdens and increasing private-sector contributions to infrastructure projects constitute core economic objectives for the coming phase, contingent upon sustained structural reforms.

Energy markets remained steady. The petroleum products automatic pricing committee maintained existing fuel price levels without adjustment, following review of currency fluctuations and Brent crude benchmarks. The Ministry of Labor confirmed disbursement of 2.608 billion pounds in emergency assistance to workers across 3,999 enterprises since the fund's launch, while 1,095 new employment opportunities were registered across thirteen governorates with salary offerings reaching 20,000 pounds.

Outlook:

Officials are preparing to implement Basel III standards for non-banking financial sectors beginning January 2027, signaling stricter regulatory alignment with international prudential requirements. Investment focus remains on African integration, with discussions ongoing regarding Egyptian depositary receipts for major regional business groups to strengthen north-south investment linkages across the continent.
