Egypt Leads Africa’s Stock Markets With 88% Share in 2025

Overview:

Africa's stock market capitalization expanded 49 percent during 2025, more than double the growth rate of emerging markets globally, with Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria and Morocco commanding 88 percent of total continental value. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development warned that corporate debt markets across Africa remain undersized relative to financing needs, with outstanding bonds reaching only 211 billion dollars by end-2025, a constraint that may limit economic expansion.

Details:

Egypt's position within Africa's top four equity markets reflects deepening capital formation across North Africa and the continent. The disparity between equities and debt instruments signals structural gaps in African financial infrastructure. Corporate bond markets remain far smaller than the scale required to support infrastructure, manufacturing and industrial expansion across the region, creating dependency on external funding sources and limiting domestic capital recycling.

Policymakers and central banks are monitoring this debt-market deficit as a bottleneck to sustainable growth. Expanding local-currency bond issuance and attracting institutional investors into African credit instruments have become priority areas for financial regulators seeking to deepen capital markets and reduce reliance on equity-based financing.

Outlook:

Investors are watching whether regulatory reforms in Egypt and peer markets can accelerate corporate bond issuance and attract international portfolio flows. Capital market diversification beyond equities remains a key metric for assessing Africa's financial system maturity and funding capacity for long-term development.
