Egypt Economy Grows 5.1% in FY2025/2026, Beats Forecasts

Overview:

Egypt's economy expanded at 5.1 percent during fiscal year 2025/2026, exceeding international forecasts, according to official statements by Planning and Economic Development Minister Ahmad Rustum. Simultaneously, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly witnessed signing of two memoranda of understanding with Chinese industrial groups—Ling Long for a 2-billion-dollar tire manufacturing complex and a broader vehicle production hub—expected to create over 5,000 jobs and deepen localized manufacturing capacity.

Details:

The fourth quarter of fiscal 2025/2026 recorded 4.7 percent growth, contributing to the full-year rate of 5.1 percent. Government officials characterized the performance as reflecting economy resilience and capacity for sustained expansion. Telecommunications and information technology sectors showed particular revival during the period, according to official reviews of sectoral performance.

The Ling Long tire manufacturing facility represents a 2-billion-dollar investment structured as an integrated industrial complex. A parallel memorandum between the Ministry of Industry and Egypt's Sovereign Fund—in partnership with Chinese investors—aims to establish a comprehensive vehicle and transport manufacturing base. Both agreements were formalized during ceremonies at the New Administrative Capital.

Energy cost pressures persist. Rising global oil and gas prices have doubled Egypt's energy import bill despite reduced import volumes, Prime Minister Madboully stated, reflecting continued exposure to commodity price volatility. Concurrently, the government is advancing plans to bring any newly discovered gas wells in the Western Desert into production. The government also clarified that "hawala al-haq" (rights transfer) arrangements in real estate developer contracts remain permissible, addressing earlier media inaccuracies about restrictions from the Financial Regulatory Authority.

Outlook:

Investors are monitoring whether the announced Chinese manufacturing projects proceed to operational stage and achieve stated employment targets. Energy price trajectories and their impact on transport and production costs remain a central concern for sustained growth momentum. Arab economic integration initiatives, emphasized during recent council meetings, may influence foreign direct investment flows into Egypt and the broader region.
