Egypt Central Bank Raises Interest Rates to 20.5% for First Time Since March 2024

Overview:

The Central Bank of Egypt's monetary policy committee increased its key lending rate to 20.5 percent and deposit rates to 20 percent on Thursday, citing external headwinds and rising global uncertainty. The move aims to anchor inflation expectations and maintain the downward trajectory of price growth. Gold prices fell 280 Egyptian pounds per gram immediately following the announcement, reflecting investor repositioning. Analysts expect limited demand-side inflationary pressure in the near term given the tightened monetary stance.

Details:

The Central Bank set overnight deposit and lending rates at 20.0 percent and 21.0 percent respectively, while the main operation rate and discount rate both reached 20.5 percent. This represents the first rate hike in more than thirty months, signaling a shift in monetary posture as policymakers respond to external volatility and currency pressures.

Real gross domestic product growth remained stable in the third quarter at approximately 4.7 percent, unchanged from the prior quarter. The Central Bank noted that output remains below full capacity, with convergence toward potential expected by the second half of 2027. Manufacturing, services, and trade sectors showed steadiness despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.

On the fiscal front, Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli inaugurated a digital fuel pump and smart gas meter manufacturing facility in Suez, a joint venture between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and Global Technical Services. The facility supports the state's strategy to localize critical industrial production and strengthen infrastructure resilience.

Outlook:

Investors are monitoring whether the rate increase will stabilize the Egyptian pound and contain imported inflation as global energy and commodity price volatility persists. Credit and equity market reactions will test confidence in the central bank's commitment to price stability over the coming weeks.
