Egypt at BRICS: Sisi Pushes Trade and Food Security Deals

Overview:

Egypt's economy is experiencing concurrent momentum across multiple sectors. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi emphasized trade expansion and food security cooperation during the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026. Domestically, consumer markets remain dynamic, with poultry prices recorded at 65–120 Egyptian pounds per kilogram, vegetable pricing updated for Sunday, September 13, and a six-month price reduction initiative launched across 284 retail cooperatives to manage affordability pressures.

Details:

The government is advancing critical infrastructure projects. The second phase of the Rapid Bus Transit (BRT) system on the Ring Road is nearing launch, incorporating 20 domestically manufactured electric buses across 16 stations. Separately, the Ministry of Transport has introduced flexible subscription pricing for metro, light rail, and monorail services targeting students and government employees. The Ministry of Housing announced housing rental units targeting citizens aged 21–35 with household incomes starting from 16,000 Egyptian pounds annually.

On the international trade front, Saudi Arabia leads BRICS member imports from Egypt, purchasing 1.8 billion dollars of Egyptian goods in the first half of 2026, while China remains Egypt's largest BRICS supplier at 10.4 billion dollars in imports. Parliamentary figures, including Ayman Mohseb and Mohamed Beltaji, have publicly noted that BRICS membership expands Egypt's export opportunities via local currency transactions and strengthens its position in multilateral commercial agreements. The central bank's Financial Regulatory Authority has mandated real-time integration between consumer finance companies and the "I-Score" credit system.

Industrial activity continues to expand. The Ministry of Industry is experiencing significant growth in electrical appliances manufacturing, with government officials touring facilities in Kafr El-Sheikh, including plastic products and fishing equipment manufacturers. The National Authority for Building Cooperatives has announced new residential and investment land offerings.

Outlook:

Investors are monitoring whether BRICS membership accelerates Egyptian exports and foreign direct investment from member economies. The successful rollout of transit infrastructure and housing programs will signal the government's capacity to execute large-scale development initiatives during a period of macroeconomic transition.
