Anglo Gold Ashanti to Expand Gold Operations in Egypt

Overview:

Egypt's economic expansion accelerated across multiple sectors today. The tourism ministry projected record arrivals, while the mining forum hosted by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi drew commitments from global operators including Anglo Gold Ashanti. French business investment in Egypt exceeded 8.5 billion dollars. Energy and customs efficiency initiatives continued, with fuel consumption cuts valued at 70 billion pounds achieved over two years and customs clearance reduced from 16 to 5 days.

Details:

Tourism Minister Sharif Fathy announced Egypt expects to receive 20 million international visitors this year, supported by expanded marketing initiatives under the "Ahram Tourism Forum" inaugurated today at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. The ministry estimates that one million tourists generate approximately 220,000 employment opportunities in the hospitality and services sectors.

In the mining sector, President El-Sisi presided over the fifth edition of Egypt Mining Forum 2026, where Anglo Gold Ashanti's Chief Executive Officer Alberto Calderon confirmed the company intends to inject additional investments and expand gold exploration operations in Egypt. The Sukari gold mine was featured prominently as a showcase of Egypt's mineral wealth. International mining executives and government representatives praised Egypt's reformed regulatory framework, which included new reforms designed to boost investment attraction and increase added value of raw materials.

On the investment front, Investment Minister Mohamed Farid Saleh, attending the Egyptian-French Business Forum in Paris, reported 8.5 billion dollars in cumulative French company investments in Egypt. He highlighted that average customs clearance time has been reduced to five days from sixteen, directly improving supply chain efficiency for investors. The government continues pursuing partnership agreements with international financial institutions to broaden financing mechanisms for large-scale projects.

Outlook:

Investors are monitoring whether Anglo Gold Ashanti's expansion plans translate into tangible capital inflows and whether sustained tourism arrivals can maintain momentum amid global economic uncertainty. France's persistent investment presence signals confidence in Egypt's reform trajectory, though stock market analysts noted selling pressures pushing equity indices down without clear fundamental justification, warranting caution on market sentiment.
