بحسب Amitav Ghosh (2024) كانت بريطانيا أول من استخدم الأفيون أداة جيوـ اقتصادية لخدمة مشروعها الاستعماري. فشركة الهند الشرقية زرعته وسوّقته قسراً في الصين لردم عجزها التجاري معها جراء استيراد الشاي، وهو ما وفّر لها عائدات ضخمة، ورسّخ تفوّق بريطانيا التجاري. وعندما قاومت الإمبراطورية الصينية هذا المسار، اندلعت حروب الأفيون (1839–1842،1856–1860)، التي انتهت بفرض معاهدات غير متكافئة، أدمجت الصين قسرا بالنظام الرأسمالي العالمي.

لقد استنزف الأفيون احتياطات الفضة الصينية، وأحدث خللاً في ميزان مدفوعاتها، وأضعف قدرتها على تمويل جهازها الإداري والعسكري. كما أنّ انتشار الإدمان أدى الى تآكل اجتماعي وأخلاقي سبق سقوط أسرة تشينغ (1911). فالمخدرات أشّرت لأزمة حضارية فككت البنية المؤسسية والشرعية السياسية.

هذا النمط التاريخي تكرر في منطقتنا، ولكن في اتجاه معاكس. فسوريا الأسد واجهت الضغوط الخارجية والعقوبات بالاستثمار في الكبتاغون الذي وفر لها موارد، مما أعاد تشكيل الجغرافيا السياسية والاقتصاد في المنطقة. المسالك السرية والخنادق التي ما زالت تتكشف اليوم دليل. فتقلص الاقتصاد السوري الشرعي على أثر العقوبات، لم يوقع النظام، بل أعاد تموضع شبكات الولاء داخل اقتصاد موازٍ أكثر انغلاقا وأقل خضوعا للرقابة (Daher, 2019).
