Israeli Strike on Beirut’s Southern Suburbs Triggers Iranian Warnings as US-Iran Deal Nears, Raising Questions Over Lebanon’s Role in Any Settlement.

Lead:

An Israeli airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut — known as the Dahiyeh — has sharply escalated tensions at a moment when Washington and Tehran are reported to be approaching a diplomatic agreement. The strike, which drew condemnation from Iranian officials and a notable reaction from US President Donald Trump, has thrown into sharp relief a central question: whether any emerging US-Iran framework will include a comprehensive and enforceable arrangement for Lebanon.

Details:

President Trump described the Beirut strike as something that "should not have happened," signalling discomfort with the timing, while affirming that a broader agreement encompassing Lebanon is within reach, according to Al-Diyar. The statement was characterised by Lebanese political observers as an implicit acknowledgement that military escalation risks undermining ongoing diplomatic momentum.

Iranian officials responded sharply. Speaker of Iran's Islamic Consultative Assembly Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf condemned the strike and accused Washington of complicity in Israeli military action, while a spokesman for the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Ibrahim Rezaei, warned that any prospective agreement must be preceded by what he called the "disciplining" of Israel, Al-Diyar reported. Tehran's foreign ministry separately indicated that the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Washington is not imminent but could occur within the coming days.

On the ground in southern Lebanon, fighting continued on multiple fronts. Hezbollah announced drone and rocket strikes targeting Israeli artillery positions in Yahmar, Sarda, Al-Adaisa, and Al-Qantara, framing its operations as defensive responses to Israeli ceasefire violations. The Israeli military, for its part, claimed to have killed seven Hezbollah operatives in southern Lebanon and issued evacuation orders to residents of thirteen southern villages, directing civilians north of the Zahrani River, according to Al-Diyar. Israeli forces also continued operations around the Ali Al-Taher heights near Nabatieh, while Israeli authorities alleged the discovery of an extensive tunnel network beneath the area.

Lebanon's Ministry of Foreign Affairs filed formal complaints with the UN Security Council over two Israeli actions: the alleged use of the herbicide glyphosate in southern border villages, and broader military violations. Former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt questioned publicly whether any prospective agreement guarantees full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and whether the Lebanese state would negotiate in its own name. Reform MP Ibrahim Mneimneh similarly argued, in remarks to Al-Diyar, that a proper political framework for negotiations had not been established.

Watch For:

Whether the anticipated US-Iran memorandum of understanding formally addresses Lebanon's sovereignty, Israeli withdrawal timelines, and Hezbollah's military posture as distinct and binding elements.

Whether Speaker Nabih Berri proceeds with a postponed legislative session to advance pending legislation, including an amnesty law, amid reports of intensified contacts between the presidency and Hezbollah.

Whether Israel halts its ground operations in southern Lebanon following any diplomatic agreement, as Israeli broadcast sources suggest the military is preparing for such a possibility without committing to full withdrawal.
